Smothered Cabbage with Apples

  • 2-3 fresh apples or pears or a combination of both rough chopped, peeling optional
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 1 lb. ham pieces
  • 2 tbl. bacon fat
  • 1 small-medium cabbage head, roughly chopped
  • 1/4 cup vinegar, fruit flavored such as pear
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper or to taste
  • Sauté fruit onions and ham pieces in bacon fat for about 3-4 minutes
  • Add cabbage, vinegar, brown sugar and pepper
  • Stir to combine and cook until cabbage is tender, as you like it.
