Smothered Cabbage with Apples

2-3 fresh apples or pears or a combination of both rough chopped, peeling optional
2 medium onions, finely chopped
1 lb. ham pieces
2 tbl. bacon fat
1 small-medium cabbage head, roughly chopped
1/4 cup vinegar, fruit flavored such as pear
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1/2 tsp. pepper or to taste

  • Sauté fruit onions and ham pieces in bacon fat for about 3-4 minutes
  • Add cabbage, vinegar, brown sugar and pepper
  • Stir to combine and cook until cabbage is tender, as you like it.
